The Vero Beach Indians struggled with assists on Friday (the Centennial Eagles had 1100% more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Vero Beach was beaten by Centennial 75-48. While losing is never fun, Vero Beach can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 324th, while Centennial is ranked 59th).
When it comes to explaining why Vero Beach lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jaylen Shelly. Despite the final result, he scored 17 points. The game was Shelly's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Isaiah Martinez, who scored 11 points.
Centennial was led to victory by Felix Buroz and Antawn SmithJR. Buroz scored 14 points along with 5 assists, while SmithJR scored 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayson Smith, who scored 9 points.
This is the second loss in a row for Vero Beach and nudges their season record down to 1-2. As for Centennial, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-0.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Vero Beach will take on Heritage at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Centennial, they will be playing at home against Suncoast at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
