The Denton Broncos's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fourth straight defeat. They fell just short of Grapevine by a score of 56-53. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss Denton has suffered since December 9, 2023.
Despite the loss, Denton saw an underclassman step up: Ethan Sheats dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sheats hasn't dropped below 11 rebounds for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Chase Thomas, who scored six points along with five assists and three steals.
Even though they lost, Denton were working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Grapevine only racked up five assists.
Grapevine's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but David Coe led the charge by scoring 20 points along with five rebounds and four steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Coe has scored at least a third of Grapevine's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Aaron Sowell, who scored 17 points.
Denton's loss was their seventh straight at home, which dropped their record down to 12-20. As for Grapevine, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 10-19.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Denton will face off against the Falcons at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Lake Dallas presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Broncos in Texas (the Falcons are ranked 218th, while the Broncos are ranked 443rd). Grapevine will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on February 2nd.
