3A Region 9 recap Sept. 26, 2012
Dixie's Blake Barney rumbled for the longest rushing play in 3A Region 9 this season in his game against Desert Hills last week. Barney's team defeated the Thunder as he sprinted for 54 yards on the play and finished with 88 in all.
Hurricane extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Snow Canyon, 38-7. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Tigers.
Kody Wilstead and Prentiss Miller gave Pine View a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Wilstead threw for 274 yards and four touchdowns, while Miller ran for 178 yards. Pano Tiatia also contributed to the rushing game with 28 yards on the ground.
Drew Batchelor was the best wideout in the league this week as Dixie bested Desert Hills. Batchelor tallied six receptions for 127 yards. Lukas Hildebrandt helped Dixie's passing attack out by catching four balls for 60 yards.
Blaine Monkres's team's Barney and Batchelor have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 3A Region 9 in both passing and receiving yards. Barney has thrown for 1373 yards this season, while Batchelor, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 25 catches for 460 yards. The Panthers' Miller leads the league in rushing yards with 1105.
Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when the Flyers take on Canyon View. Dixie's offense has scored 228 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Falcons have allowed only 215 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Pine View takes on Hurricane. At the moment, Ray Hosner's team is in fifth, while Chris Homer's team is in first.
Carl Franke's team was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Carl Franke's team 30-27. The Thunder came in at 23 in the state poll after placing at number 28 last week.
