The Cesar Chavez Champions came tearing into Thursday's match with 18 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.4 points) and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 64-54 victory over Tolleson. Given Cesar Chavez's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 19th, while the Wolverines are ranked 122nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cesar Chavez got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Lex Clontz out in front who scored 19 points along with two steals. Clontz hasn't dropped below 17 points for seven straight games. Another player making a difference was Danta Stallworth, who scored 14 points along with four steals.
Tolleson's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jahlil Loyd, who scored 21 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Judah Lancaster, who scored 12 points.
Even though they lost, Tolleson were working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cesar Chavez only racked up 12 assists.
Cesar Chavez's win was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 76.8 points per game. As for Tolleson, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 12-13.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games.
