After flying high against the Fond du Lac Ojibwe O Ogichida last Saturday, the Red Lake Warriors came back down to earth. Red Lake fell 94-87 to Nevis on Thursday. Red Lake has struggled against Nevis recently, as their match on Thursday was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.
Red Lake's loss came despite strong showings from Gerald Kingbird jr and Jack Brown. Kingbird jr scored 28 points along with nine assists and eight rebounds, while Brown scored 35 points. Kingbird jr scored a full 32.2% of Red Lake's points, the sixth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Austin Perkins was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with nine rebounds.
Alex Lester was on fire for Nevis: he dropped a double-double on 31 points and 18 rebounds. The game was Lester's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was AJ Bessler, who scored 18 points along with eight rebounds.
Red Lake's defeat dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Nevis, the win was the fourth in a row (dating back to last season) for them, bringing their record for this year to 3-0.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Red Lake won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Clearbrook-Gonvick at 6:00 p.m. on December 22, 2023. Clearbrook-Gonvick will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Minnesota Rankings (they are ranked 391st, while Red Lake is ranked 136th). Nevis will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
