Elgin is 0-10 against South Elgin since April of 2019 but things could change on Monday. The Maroons are taking a road trip to square off against the Storm at 4:30 p.m. Elgin knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past three matchups -- so hopefully South Elgin likes a good challenge.
Elgin is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Waukegan with a sharp 23-6 win on Saturday. With that victory, the Maroons brought their scoring average up to 8.8 runs per game.
Ainesly Downing made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. Downing was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring four runs and stealing four bases while getting on base in three of her six plate appearances. Those stolen bases marked the first that she snagged this season.
In other batting news, Abigail Mutolo and Grace Tetrev did most of the damage at the plate: Mutolo got on base in all six of her plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base, while Tetrev scored five runs and stole four bases while getting on base in five of her six plate appearances. With that strong performance, Tetrev is now averaging an impressive 1.4 stolen bases per game. Another player making a difference was Reyna Gonzalez, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
Elgin always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .714. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, South Elgin posted their closest win since April 13, 2024 on Saturday. They skirted past Central 4-3. The Storm haven't had any issues with the Rockets recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
South Elgin's win was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Adreana Hauser, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base. Those three hits gave Hauser a new career-high.
Elgin picked up their first road victory, bumping their record up to 2-4. As for South Elgin, their record is now 7-3.
Elgin's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's contest. The Maroons have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for South Elgin, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Elgin continue to outrun the ball?
Elgin suffered a grim 17-2 defeat to South Elgin in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Maroons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
