After a string of three wins, the Winthrop College Prep Academy Spartans's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They had to suffer through a rough 82-46 loss at the hands of Tampa Prep. While losing is never fun, Winthrop College Prep Academy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 324th, while Tampa Prep is ranked 113th).
Despite the defeat, Winthrop College Prep Academy saw an underclassman step up: Zamyria King scored 17 points along with nine rebounds and six steals. King has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of JoLesa Birkhead, who scored 21 points.
Tampa Prep was led to victory by Treniti Fluker and Gabby Bush. Fluker scored 25 points, while Bush scored 25 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Bush has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Natalia Long, who scored 15 points.
Winthrop College Prep Academy now has a losing record at 10-11. As for Tampa Prep, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-7 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Winthrop College Prep Academy on the road again on Friday and play against Academy of the Holy Names at 6:00 p.m. on January 26th. As for Tampa Prep, they will square off against Clearwater at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
