If the Trico Pioneers were feeling good off their 45-12 takedown of the Shawnee Redskins last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Trico was dealt a 57-27 loss at the hands of the Blackcats on Saturday. Trico was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-13.
Despite the loss, Trico saw an underclassman step up: Whitney Lovel scored 13 points along with three steals. Another player making a difference was Taylor Cottom, who scored eight points.
Trico struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Goreville pulled down 16 offensive rebounds.
Goreville was led to victory by Breanna Suits and Abby Compton. Suits almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine steals, while Compton scored 25 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Compton has scored at least a third of Goreville's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ariana Elms, who scored six points along with four steals.
Trico has been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last ten matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-12 record this season. As for Goreville, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 24-3.
Trico will head out on the road to take on the Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Vienna has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 369 points over their last six contests. As for Goreville, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against the Red Devils at 6:00 p.m. Sesser-Valier/Waltonville will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings (they are ranked 465th, while the Blackcats are ranked 98th).
