MaxPreps Top 25 national high school volleyball rankings

Cathedral (Indianapolis) swept through its own tournament last weekend with four 3-0 victories and remains No. 1 atop the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard.

The victories improved the Fighting Irish to 23-0 on the season. They have won 57 of 64 sets, including 48 of their last 50.

P.K. Yonge (Gainesville, Fla.) defeated a pair of foes handily (150-81) and held onto No. 2. Santa Margarita (Calif.) won three matches, including wins over talent-loaded Huntington Beach (Calif.) and previously highly ranked Aliso Niguel (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and moved to No. 3.

Rounding out the Top 5 are St. Ursula (Toledo, Ohio) and Jesuit (Portland, Ore.), which moved from eighth to fifth.

New to Top 10 this week are Richard (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and preseason No. 1 St. James (Lenexa, Kan.). St. James has 21 consecutive wins since losing its season-opener.

New to the Top 25 this week are Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.), Buford (Ga.), Bent (Lisle, Ill.), Carroll (Fort Wayne, Ind.), North (Edmond, Okla.) and Novi (Mich.). Four teams from California fell out of the Top 25 just this week.

Two major tournaments featuring several Top 25 teams are in the spotlight this weekend – the ASICS Tournament at Mother McAuley in Chicago and Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.


1. (1 last week) Cathedral (Indianapolis), 23-0
Cathedral swept through its own invite with a 4-0 record and in the process outscored its foes by 97 points.

2. (2) P.K. Yonge (Gainesville, Fla.), 13-0
P.K. Yonge has won 32 straight.

3. (5) Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), 24-1
Since losing to Durango invitational champion Assumption (Louisville, Ky.), Santa Margarita has taken three straight by 3-0 margins.

4. (4) St. Ursula Academy (Toledo, Ohio), 14-0
SUA has lost just two sets out of 41 this season.

5. (8) Jesuit (Portland, Ore.), 11-0
Jesuit has won 48 matches in a row and has yet to lose a set this season.

6. (6) Winter Springs (Fla.), 13-1
Winter Springs recorded two lopsided 3-0 wins last week, scoring 150 points and giving up just 60. No. 2 P. K. Yonge, which defeated Winter Springs a week ago at the Berkeley Prep Premiere Tournament, is scheduled for a Wednesday rematch.

7. (7) Carroll (Southlake, Texas), 32-3
Carroll has won 16 straight and lost just two sets in the process.

8. (11) St. James Academy (Lenexa, Kan.), 21-1
The Thunder handed Nixa (Mo.) its first loss of the season in the semifinals of the Blue Springs Valley Tournament, then beat 19-4 Howell (St. Charles, Mo.) in the final to run their win streak to 21.

9. (10) Parkland (Allentown, Pa.), 13-0
Parkland has 40 wins in a row.

10. (19) Richard (Ann Arbor, Mich.), 30-0
The Fighting Irish won another five matches and stayed undefeated.

11. (13) Xavier College Prep (Phoenix), 13-1
Xavier defeated Chandler (Ariz.) and Gilbert (Ariz.) last week to make it four in a row.

12. (17) Immaculate Heart Academy (Washington Township, N.J.), 12-0
IMH's win streak stands at 30 and the team has yet to lose a set in 2015.

13. (14) Assumption (Louisville, Ky.), 20-5
Assumption competes in the Mother McAuley ASICS Tournament Friday and Saturday.

14. (15) Dripping Springs (Texas), 35-2
Dripping Springs has won 28 straight.

15. (NR) Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.), 14-2
Since going 5-2 in the Kang Invitational in Hawaii, the Sea Hawks have won nine straight without losing a set.

16. (NR) Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.),18-1
Since losing to York, Benet has won 14 straight.

17. (18) Torrey Pines (San Diego), 10-1
TPHS beat La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad), 3-1.

18. (NR) Novi (Mich.), 27-1
Novi's only loss is to unbeaten and 10th-ranked Richard.

19. (NR) Carroll (Fort Wayne, Ind.), 21-1
Since losing to giant-killer Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers), Carroll has won 16 straight, including a win over No. 14 Assumption (Louisville, Ky.).

20. (20) Manatee (Bradenton, Fla.), 14-1
Manatee's only loss this season is to No. 6 Winter Springs, 2-1.

21. (NR) Edmond North (Okla.), 25-1
The Huskies recorded five 3-0 wins to capture the Stillwater Invitational Tournament.

22. (24) Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.), 22-1
Dorman avenged its only loss of season with 2-1 win over St. Joseph's (Greenville), then blanked Riverside (Greer) and Mann (Greenville).

23. (9) Yorktown (Ind.), 23-1
After running its win streak to 23, Yorktown lost to 17-4 Central (Muncie).

24. (NR) Buford (Ga.), 30-0
The Wolves have one senior and have lost just one set since Aug. 20.

25. (25) Sacred Heart (Louisville), 22-4
Sacred Heart bounced back from a loss to No. 17 Torrey Pines with 3-0 wins over Providence (Clarksville, Ind.) and crosstown rivals Atherton and Holy Cross.

Dropped Out: Notre Dame Cathedral-Latin (Ohio), Aliso Niguel (Calif.), Santiago (Calif.), Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.), Saint Francis (Calif.) and Corona del Mar (Calif.).
