The McDonough Rams had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.7 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Wednesday. They snuck past Westlake with a 61-57 win. That's two games straight that McDonough has won by exactly four points.
McDonough's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Mekhai Johnson, who scored 15 points along with three steals. Johnson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Tyrik Petway, who scored 14 points along with five assists and two steals.
Westlake's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jagan Thomas, who scored eight points along with five rebounds. Ethan Relf was another key contributor, scoring ten points.
Even though they lost, Westlake smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as McDonough only pulled down five offensive rebounds.
McDonough's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.2 points per game. As for Westlake, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-8.
McDonough will look to defend their home court on Friday against Huntingtown at 6:30 p.m. Huntingtown will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Maryland Rankings (they are ranked 203rd, while McDonough is ranked 65th). As for Westlake, they will head out on the road to take on Chopticon at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
