The Auburn Tigers will venture away from home to take on the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Auburn is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
It was a proper cat-fight when Auburn faced off against Prattville on Wednesday. Auburn blew past Prattville 9-2. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Will Whatley made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over four innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent over his last five matches. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while going 3-for-4. That's the most runs he has posted over his last 13 games.
In other pitching news, Hank Brantley looked comfortable as he pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.
Back at the plate, JB Upton was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That triple marked the first that he hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Weston Luther, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Auburn kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.
While Stanhope Elmore didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-28), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Chilton County on Tuesday as Stanhope Elmore made off with a 7-1 victory. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.
Tyler Woodham spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up nine Ks.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jackson Hynes, who scored two runs while going 2-for-2.
Auburn's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-5. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games. As for Stanhope Elmore, their record is now 7-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Auburn has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Stanhope Elmore struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Auburn skirted past Stanhope Elmore 9-8 in their previous matchup two weeks ago. The rematch might be a little tougher for Auburn since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
