Monsignor Martin recap Sept. 26, 2012
St. Mary's moved up to 164 from 198 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Monsignor Martin. The Lancers were able to make the jump by beating Ellicottville/West Valley Central 41-0.
St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Cardinal O'Hara, 35-0. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
Canisius's dynamic duo of Tyler Mascio and Denzel Benton proved tough for Walsh Jesuit to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Mascio threw for 137 yards and Benton had 56 yards receiving. Ryan Richards helped Canisius' passing attack out by catching five balls for 40 yards.
Ilo Noble was the most productive running back in the league this week. In eight carries, he ran for 236 yards as St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute defeated the Warriors. Rod Payne also contributed to the rushing game with 47 yards on the ground.
Canisius' Mascio and Benton have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading Monsignor Martin in both passing and receiving yards. Mascio has thrown for 778 yards this season, while Benton, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 17 catches for 278 yards. The Hawks' Anthony DiFrancesco leads the league in rushing yards with 591.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Bishop Timon-St. Jude takes on St. Mary's. The Tigers are in fifth place, while the Lancers are in third place.
Rich Robbins's team was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Walsh Jesuit 14-7. The Crusaders came in at 14 in the state poll after placing at number 30 last week.
