After flying high against the Canajoharie Cougars on Monday, the Mayfield Panthers came back down to earth. Mayfield fell to Berne-Knox-Westerlo 53-47. While losing is never fun, Mayfield can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 289th, while Berne-Knox-Westerlo is ranked 35th).
Mayfield's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brianna Iannuzzi, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds. The game was Iannuzzi's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Cloey Dopp, who scored 14 points.
Mayfield has fallen quite a ways from their 19-3 record last season and are now at 3-5. As for Berne-Knox-Westerlo, the victory for they keeps them at an undefeated 4-0.
Mayfield will head out on the road to face off against Cambridge at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. Berne-Knox-Westerlo will finish 2023 at home by hosting Loudonville Christian at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
