Softball Recap: West Mesa Wins Going Away Against St. Pius X

West Mesa gave up the first runs on Friday, but they didn't let that get them down. They were the clear victors by a 16-4 margin over the St. Pius X Sartans. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won four contests by 11 runs or more so far this season.

Nevaeh 'Slim' Ortiz was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off nine hits. Ortiz was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. She also hit two doubles, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, Mya Baca was a standout: she scored three runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March of 2024. Ellie Padilla was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.

West Mesa always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

The win made it two in a row for West Mesa and bumps their season record up to 4-6. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 7 runs in those games. As for St. Pius X, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 4-9.

West Mesa wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, an 11-1 loss against Eldorado on the 22nd. As for St. Pius X, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 19-9 win against Los Alamos on the 22nd.
