Morningside Academy is 1-9 against Master's Academy since March of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Morningside Academy Eagles will welcome the Master's Academy Patriots at 3:00 p.m. Morningside Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 14.5 runs per game this season.
Last Thursday, Morningside Academy came up short against Lincoln Park Academy and fell 11-6. The game marked the Eagles' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Leigha Race put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and seven unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
In other batting news, Trinity Richards and Madison LeVasseur did some serious damage despite the final result: Richards scored a run while going 2-for-3, while LeVasseur got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.
Even though they lost, Morningside Academy hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most four strikeouts every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Master's Academy entered their tilt with Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy on Friday with four consecutive wins , and they'll enter their next game with five. They were the clear victor by a 12-2 margin over the Tigers. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last six times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Nola Matz spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on two hits and racked up seven Ks. Those seven strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Alison Viersma, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That triple marked the first that she hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Phoenix Henderson, who scored three runs while going 3-for-4.
Master's Academy's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Morningside Academy, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 5-1.
Monday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Morningside Academy has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .680. However, it's not like Master's Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .502. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Morningside Academy took their victory against Master's Academy in their previous matchup back in February by a conclusive 18-3. Does Morningside Academy have another victory up their sleeve, or will Master's Academy turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
