The Corona del Sol Aztecs will take on the JW North Huskies in a tournament on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
While Corona del Sol didn't have the best season last year (they finished 14-22), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Lake Havasu on Thursday as Corona del Sol made off with a 14-2 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Aztecs.
Jami Sheehan was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while going 2-for-2. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylie Pequeno, who scored four runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Corona del Sol always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .556. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lake Havasu only posted an OBP of .333.
Meanwhile, in Thursday's Canine Competition, JW North came out on top. They never let Skyline get on the board and left with a 20-0 victory on Thursday.
Natalie Munoz made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. That's the fewest hits she has allowed since back in February. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February of 2024.
In other batting news, JW North got a massive performance out of Angelina Martinez, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Denise Martinez was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3.
JW North has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. Corona del Sol's record is now 7-3.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Corona del Sol hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .337. However, it's not like JW North struggles in that department as they've averaged .436. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
