Sandia is 8-2 against Eldorado since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Matadors will host the Golden Eagles at 10:00 a.m. Sandia knows how to get runs on the board -- the squad has finished with ten runs or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Eldorado likes a good challenge.
Sandia is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Everything went their way against Manzano on Saturday as they made off with a 21-3 win. The Matadors haven't had any issues with the Monarchs recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
Liliana Villanueva was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run and three runs.
In other batting news, Briana Trujillo was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs, and one RBI. Those two triples gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Natalie Uecker, who scored two runs while going 3-for-3.
Sandia kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Eldorado came up short against La Cueva on Saturday, falling 15-3. The Golden Eagles have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Eldorado saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alyssa Martinez, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Sandia's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-8. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Eldorado, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-9.
Saturday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Sandia hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .392. However, it's not like Eldorado struggles in that department as they've averaged .421. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Sandia took their win against Eldorado when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 18-3 score. Will the Matadors repeat their success, or do the Golden Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
