Martin County had won three straight road games and Jordan Matthewson did his part to make it four on Thursday. The Gators walked away with a 29-16 victory over the Hertford County Bears with plenty of help from Matthewson, who rushed for 102 yards and one score on only 11 carries, and also picked up 35 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. His longest rush was for an impressive 52 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.
Several Bears players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Ayden Everette, who rushed for 116 yards and one TD. Everette is becoming a predictor of Hertford County's success: when he posts at least 80 rushing yards the team is 4-1 (and 1-4 when he doesn't). The Bears also got a significant boost from Justin Bunch, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 90 yards.
Martin County's win bumped their record up to 7-3. As for Hertford County, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-5 record this season.
