Basketball Recap: Greenwood Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Acen Swain and Isaac O'neal

Greenwood was the 58-48 winner over Perry Meridian when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Greenwood Woodmen took a 72-59 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Perry Meridian Falcons on Friday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Woodmen came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 103rd, while the Falcons are ranked 244th).

Greenwood's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Isaac O'Neal, who went 8 of 18 on his way to 22 points and five steals, and Acen Swain, who went 6 for 11 en route to 15 points. Those five steals gave O'Neal a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan King, who posted seven points.

Leading Perry Meridian to victory were Bryce Mathis and Sterlin Lewis. Mathis went 8 of 10 on his way to 20 points and five assists, while Lewis went 7 for 10 en route to 18 points. Mathis' evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Jeremy Johnson also deserves some recognition as he scored his first points of the season.

Greenwood has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-7 record this season. As for Perry Meridian, the victory snapped their losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 5-13 record.

Greenwood has already played their next game, a 53-49 win against Roncalli on the 1st. As for Perry Meridian, they will square off against New Palestine at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
