The Mt. Vernon Marauders will take on the Richmond Red Devils at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Mt. Vernon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Mt. Vernon came up short against Pendleton Heights and fell 6-1. The loss continues a trend for the Marauders in their meetings with the Arabians: they've now lost three in a row.
Mt. Vernon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mason Meyer, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases. Another was Gavin Weaver, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Richmond made easy work of Cambridge City Lincoln on Thursday and carried off an 11-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Red Devils, who have now won five matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Darin Candlish tossed a big game, striking out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Weston Jones was incredible, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs, and one stolen base. Richmond is undefeated when Jones posts two or more runs, but 4-6 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Darwyn Roman, who went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases and three runs.
Richmond kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive games.
Richmond's victory bumped their record up to 8-6. As for Mt. Vernon, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mt. Vernon has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Richmond struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Mt. Vernon came out on top in a nail-biter against Richmond when the teams last played back in May of 2025, sneaking past 2-0. Will the Marauders repeat their success, or do the Red Devils have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
