5A Special District 3 recap October 1, 2013
Ashland added to the longest winning streak in 5A Special District 3 this week by beating Springfield, 34-28. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Grizzlies.
Willamette fell to Marist 46-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Darrius Jackson was a bright spot for the Wolverines, as he ran for 36 yards in the loss.
The Spartans' offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Brody Cooper threw for 236 and 2 touchdowns and Matt Haney had 134 yards receiving. On the ground Kashi Hall chipped in 76 yards. Dustin Jones helped Marist's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 45 yards.
He was 11-20 with 0 interception.
Max Groff was a key player and the best on defense this week as North Eugene lost to Eagle Point. The 5-foot-10 sophomore.
Cooper put up the best numbers through the air as Marist defeated Willamette. Cooper's favorite target this week was Haney, who caught 5 passes for 134 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Frank Geske's team's Cooper and Jones have proven to be a lethal combination. Cooper has thrown for 733 yards this season, while Jones, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 22 catches for 373 yards. Sam Aguirre from Adam Kennybrew's team leads the league in rushing with 485 yards.
The Highlanders are in seventh place, while Ashland is in first place.
Charlie Hall's team and the Millers played the closest game in the league this week, with Charlie Hall's team eventually emerging with a 34-28 victory.
