It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Fairfield Prep ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the Trumbull Eagles. While the Jesuits didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-12), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Fairfield Prep got a great performance from Andrew Wong as he struck out six batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits.
At the plate, Vinny Lombardo was incredible, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Fin Dockwell, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Fairfield Prep has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.2 runs over those games. Having lost for the first time this season, Trumbull fell to 3-1.
Coming up, Fairfield Prep will head out on the road to challenge La Salle Academy at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. As for Trumbull, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Danbury at 4:00 p.m. The Eagles are facing the Hatters at the right time seeing as the Hatters are stuck on a five-game losing streak.
