Austin is on a three-game streak of home losses, the Buffs a five-game streak of away losses, but someone's luck is about to change. The Austin Mustangs will take on the Milby Buffs at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Austin and the Buffs are at an even 4-4 over their past eight head-to-heads.
Last Tuesday, Austin lost to the Yellowjackets at home by a decisive 47-29 margin. Austin was down 43-15 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
Meanwhile, Milby made easy work of the Apollos on Monday and carried off a 35-13 victory. The win was just what Milby needed coming off of a 68-21 defeat in their prior game.
Milby found their leader in underclassman Ke'lia Smith, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten steals. That makes it 12 consecutive games in which Smith has scored at least a third of Milby's points. Nayeli Medina was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with six rebounds.
Austin has not been sharp recently as the team's lost six of their last seven matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-11 record this season. As for Milby, their victory bumped their record up to 8-20.
Everything came up roses for Austin against the Buffs in their previous matchup back in December of 2023 as the squad secured a 52-22 win. Will Austin repeat their success, or do the Buffs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
