Baseball Recap: Union Has No Trouble Against Newton

Union won the last time they faced Newton and things went their way on Saturday too. Union blew past Newton 16-1. Considering the Yellowjackets have won seven games by more than eight runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Jackson Flake made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-2.

In other batting news, Mason Tucker and Austin Lee did most of the damage at the plate: Tucker went 2-for-3 with six RBI, one triple, and one double, while Lee scored three runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-2. That's the most stolen bases Lee has posted since back in February. Rafe Manning was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

Union hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in six consecutive contests.

Union's victory bumped their record up to 11-6. As for Newton, they are on a 23-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-7.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Union will square off against Philadelphia at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Newton, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Newton Tigers duke it out with Sebastopol Bobcats at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
