Sumner is 2-8 against Rogers since May of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Spartans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Rams at 4:00 p.m. Sumner is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10 runs per game this season.
Sumner easily dispatched Olympia on Wednesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Spartans fell just short of Emerald Ridge by a score of 10-8 on Thursday. The loss was the Spartans' first of the season.
Emma Hixon made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Naya Alastra, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Rogers entered their tilt with Spanaway Lake on Thursday with six consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with seven. They put the hurt on the Sentinels with a sharp 17-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Rams, who have now won four matchups by nine runs or more so far this season.
Emma Mitchell made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Mitchell was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Ava Rossmeier was incredible, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in RBI (three). Madelyn Stanaway was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI and one double.
Rogers' win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Sumner, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1.
Sumner's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's contest. The Spartans have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Rogers, though, as they've been averaging only 1.3 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Sumner continue to outrun the ball?
