The Sanderson Spartans's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They ended up on the wrong side of a tough 61-36 walloping at the hands of Athens Drive. Sanderson has struggled against Athens Drive recently, as their game on Friday was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the defeat, Sanderson saw an underclassman step up: Amyah Lynn scored 19 points along with three steals. Summer Haith was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Athens Drive's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kianna Gulley, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gulley has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Quincie Toran, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Sanderson has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-12 record this season. As for Athens Drive, their win bumped their record up to 5-9.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sanderson on the road again on Friday and play against Broughton at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th. Hopefully Broughton focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Tuesday. As for Athens Drive, they will head out on the road to take on Enloe at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Enloe is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
