The Centennial Hawks were the 54-37 winner over the Roswell Coyotes when they last played one another back in January of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Centennial opened the new year with a less-than-successful 48-35 defeat to Roswell. That's two games in a row now that Centennial has lost by exactly 13 points.
Centennial lost on Friday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Elena Gonzales, who scored 11 points. The game was Gonzales' fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Audi Torrez, who scored ten points along with six rebounds.
Centennial's defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 5-8. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 29.5 points per game. As for Roswell, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-3.
Centennial will be playing at home against Deming at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Roswell won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Organ Mountain at 1:00 p.m. on January 6th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Mexico (Organ Mountain is ranked 22nd, while Roswell is ranked 17th).
