The Whitko Wildcats came tearing into Wednesday's matchup with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Southwood by a score of 55-47. Given Whitko's advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 90th, while Southwood is ranked 308th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Whitko got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jayma Stonebraker out in front who scored 15 points along with five rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kloe Krieg, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds and three blocks.
Despite the loss, Southwood saw an underclassman step up: Hali Pershing dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds. Isabelle Ashba was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with five steals.
Whitko's win bumped their record up to 18-3. As for Southwood, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-13.
Whitko will head out on the road to face off against Wawasee at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Wawasee focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Tuesday. As for Southwood, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Maconaquah at 7:45 p.m. Hopefully Maconaquah focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 27 last Thursday.
