The Morenci Wildcats suffered their biggest defeat yet this season on Thursday. They were beaten by Pima 69-25. While losing is never fun, Morenci can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 112th, while Pima is ranked 29th).
Morenci's loss came despite strong showings from Rozlyn Funari and Sway Cordova. Funari scored nine points along with five steals, while Cordova scored six points along with three steals. Funari is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played.
Morenci struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Morenci now has a losing record at 8-9. As for Pima, they pushed their record up to 12-2 with that victory, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season.
Morenci won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Tombstone at 5:30 p.m. on January 12th. Tombstone is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak. As for Pima, they will head out on the road to square off against Safford at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Safford has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last six games.
