5A Region III District 22 recap October 22, 2013
Dobie moved up to 476 from 507 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region III District 22. The Longhorns were able to move up by defeating Alvin 24-20.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Pearland beat South Houston 56-12. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Oilers.
Manvel's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Deriq King threw for 123 and 3 touchdowns and Sean Dykes had 41 yards receiving. On the ground Koda Martin contributed 43 yards. Reggie Hemphill helped Manvel's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 37 yards.
He went 5-6 with 0 interceptions.
Martin was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 1 carry, he ran for 43 yards as the Mavericks topped Pasadena. Teammate Leonard Owens added to the ground attack by rushing for 43 yards.
Leading 5A Region III District 22 in both passing and receiving yards, Manvel's King and Gary Haynes have proven to be a lethal combination. 5-10 quarterback King has thrown for 1,130 yards this season, while Haynes has 23 catches for 447 yards. The Yellowjackets' Eric Olszewski leads the league in rushing yards with 536.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Pearland takes on Pasadena Memorial. Tony Heath's team is in first place, while the Mavericks are in fifth place.
Pasadena Memorial was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Mavericks defeated Sam Rayburn 33-13.
