Baseball Recap: Lytle Extends Winning Streak to Three

Lytle had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 21-run drubbing they dealt Cotulla on Tuesday. The Pirates were the clear victors by a 22-1 margin over the Cowboys. The win was nothing new for the Pirates as they're now sitting on three straight.

Jair Flores and Weston Jackson made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Flores pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Jackson struck out seven batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Flores also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Lytle is 8-3 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 6-8 otherwise. At bat, Flores went 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Jackson scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-4. That's the most stolen bases Jackson has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Toby Davila was a standout: he scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Lytle's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 10-11 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Damien Barco, who scored three runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Lytle kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.2 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 9.2.

Lytle pushed their record up to 14-11 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Cotulla, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That lines up perfectly with their 3-10-1 record this season.
