4A Region II District 16 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Whitehouse extended the longest winning streak in 4A Region II District 16 this week by beating Jacksonville, 42-35. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Wildcats.
Tyler took down Lindale 35-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Greg Ward threw for 245 yards and one touchdown and ran for 56 yards in the win.
Whitehouse's dynamic duo of Patrick Mahomes and Dylan Cantrell proved tough for the Indians to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Mahomes threw for 251 yards and four touchdowns and Cantrell had 141 yards receiving. Jake Parker helped Whitehouse's passing attack out by catching four balls for 50 yards.
DeQuante Wood was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 85 yards on nine carries as the Lions bested Jacksonville.
The Wildcats' Mahomes and Cantrell have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Mahomes has thrown for 1937 yards this season, while Cantrell, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 40 catches for 778 yards. Devontay Bell from Corsicana leads the league in rushing with 354 yards.
Going into this week's game against Nacogdoches, Whitehouse's Mahomes needs 63 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season.
A big matchup in 4A Region II District 16 this week will be when Tyler takes on Chris Taber's team. At the moment, Ricklan Holmes' team is in second, while the Indians are in third.
The Tigers made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 3,507 from 3,742. The advance stemmed from a 28-7 victory over the Dragons last week.
