The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Colquitt County Packers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Fitzgerald will be strutting in after a victory while Colquitt County will be coming in after a defeat.
It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Fitzgerald ultimately got the result they hoped for last Saturday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 67-64 victory over Coffee. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Fitzgerald's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Anteneese Nixon led the charge by scoring 14 points along with five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Kianti McDuffie, who scored 14 points along with five assists.
Meanwhile, after a string of seven wins, Colquitt County's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 55-50 hit to the loss column at the hands of Veterans.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Amira Walters- Smith, who scored 17 points. The matchup was her eighth in a row with at least ten points. Jamya Moore was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with five rebounds.
Fitzgerald's victory bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Colquitt County, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-1.
Fitzgerald came up short against Colquitt County in their previous matchup back in January of 2015, falling 55-46. Thankfully for Fitzgerald, Za'nautica Downs (who scored 22 points) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
