Central City/Centura strolled into their game on Saturday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They put the hurt on the Centennial Broncos with a sharp 9-2 victory. The Kernels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by six runs or more this season.
Hayden Murphy and Parker Zikmund made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Murphy pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Zikmund pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Murphy has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Murphy got on base in two of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Zikmund went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits Zikmund has posted over his last nine games.
In other pitching news, Luke Vakiner looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Conner Erickson was incredible, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one home run, two stolen bases, and four RBI. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Colter Lueders was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Central City/Centura always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Centennial only posted an OBP of .241.
Central City/Centura's win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-0. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Centennial, they are on a 12-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-10.
Looking ahead, Central City/Centura will challenge Malcolm at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Clippers will roll in looking for their 17th straight win, something the Kernels surely won't give up without a fight. As for Centennial, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Maxwell at 4:30 p.m. The Wildcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.86 runs per game on average), something the Broncos will no doubt try to take advantage of.
