Even though the Pueblo County Hornets have not done well against the Pueblo South Colts recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Pueblo County came out on top against Pueblo South by a score of 65-54. For Pueblo County, this counts as revenge for the 65-39 loss Pueblo South walked away with the last time they faced one another back in February of 2023.
Pueblo County had a senior duo take command as Johnathan Gonzales dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds and Dominic Mauro scored 20 points along with seven rebounds. Mauro continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Brock Roseman was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
When it comes to explaining why Pueblo South lost, one person who can't be blamed is Maurice Austin. Despite the final result, he scored 32 points along with three steals. That was a full 59.3% of Pueblo South's points, marking the 14th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Will Flowers, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
Even though they lost, Pueblo South smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Pueblo County's victory bumped their record up to 10-5. As for Pueblo South, they now have a losing record at 7-8.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pueblo County will square off against Pueblo East at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Pueblo East focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 27 on Tuesday. As for Pueblo South, they will head out on the road to take on Pueblo West at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Pueblo West focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 24 last Saturday.
