The Sequoyah Eagles will head out to face off against the Verdigris Cardinals at 1:00 p.m. on Monday. Sequoyah's pitching crew has only allowed 3.3 runs per game this season, so Verdigris' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Sequoyah couldn't beat Oologah on Thursday even though they stacked five runs on them in the third inning. The Eagles fell just short of the Mustangs by a score of 7-6. The Eagles have struggled against the Mustangs recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.
Meanwhile, Verdigris had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 16-4 victory. Surprisingly, this marked the fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor in this series.
Ian Lane was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Lane was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Mac West was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. West is crushing it when it comes to RBI: he's brought in at least four every time he's taken the field this season. Korbyn Ballinger was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Verdigris was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .409 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Sequoyah's defeat dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Verdigris, their record is now 6-1.
Sequoyah suffered a grim 16-3 defeat to Verdigris in their previous matchup back in April of 2016. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
