Softball Recap: Whitley County Victorious

Whitley County came out on top against Bell County on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run third inning. The Colonels walked away with a 10-6 victory over the Bobcats. The Colonels haven't had any issues with the Bobcats recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.

Megan McKiddy spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Jazlynn Brown and Katelyn Shepherd did most of the damage at the plate: Brown went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Shepherd went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most runs Shepherd has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Belle Trent, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Whitley County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 8.8.

Whitley County's victory bumped their record up to 11-21. As for Bell County, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 12-9.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Whitley County will venture away from home to take on Harlan County at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Black Bears' pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so the Colonels' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Bell County, they are taking a road trip to square off against McCreary Central at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
