The Iona Prep Gaels will head out on the road to square off against the Mt. St. Michael Academy Mountaineers at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Iona Prep has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 392 points over their last six contests.
Last Saturday, Iona Prep faced Archbishop Stepinac in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Iona Prep was just a bucket shy of victory and fell 68-67 to Archbishop Stepinac. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Tuesday (59), Iona Prep still had to take the loss.
Meanwhile, Mt. St. Michael Academy's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their sixth straight defeat. They were beaten by St. Raymond Boys 80-44. While losing is never fun, Mt. St. Michael Academy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 275th, while St. Raymond Boys is ranked second).
Iona Prep has not been sharp recently as the team has lost six of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-6 record this season. As for Mt. St. Michael Academy, they dropped their record down to 4-11 with that defeat, which was their third straight at home.
Iona Prep strolled past Mt. St. Michael Academy when the teams last played back in January of 2023 by a score of 75-56. The rematch might be a little tougher for Iona Prep since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
