Basketball Recap: Brandon Mccoy Jr Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Mater Dei

After losing to Mater Dei the last time they met, St. John Bosco decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The St. John Bosco Braves walked away with a 66-57 win over the Mater Dei Monarchs on Saturday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Braves.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead St. John Bosco to victory, but perhaps none more so than Brandon McCoy Jr, who went 9 of 13 en route to 21 points along with five assists and five steals. That's the most points McCoy Jr has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Chris Komin, who posted 15 points and four steals.

McCoy Jr wasn't the only one working in the assists department: St. John Bosco was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mater Dei only racked up eight assists.

Despite the defeat, Mater Dei saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Demarcus Henry scored 23 points in addition to six boards and four steals. Henry has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Blake Davidson was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds.

St. John Bosco's victory bumped their record up to 23-4. As for Mater Dei, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 19-7.

St. John Bosco will venture away from home to face off against JSerra Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. St. John Bosco is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 68.4 points per game this season. Mater Dei has already played their next contest, an 87-75 loss against Santa Margarita on the 3rd.
