The El Capitan Gauchos proved they can win big last Saturday (they won by 23) but on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 70-67 win over Atwater. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory El Capitan has posted yet this season.
El Capitan was led to victory by Diego Ultreras and Jay Ervin. Ultreras scored 19 points along with seven assists and three steals, while Ervin scored 16 points along with five rebounds and three steals. AJ Tadeo was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
The win makes it two in a row for El Capitan and bumps their season record up to 12-9. As for Atwater, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-10.
El Capitan will head out on the road to take on Central Valley at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Central Valley will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 1054th, while El Capitan is ranked 474th). As for Atwater, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Venture Academy at 6:30 p.m. Venture Academy has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 1,434 points over their last 18 contests.
