Hugoton has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Liberal Redskins at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hugoton will be strutting in after a victory while Liberal will be coming in after a defeat.
Hugoton scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They claimed a resounding 93-20 win over Cimarron at home. Given Hugoton's advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 25th, while Cimarron is ranked 230th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, it's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 76-44, which was the final score in Liberal's tilt against South on Saturday. Liberal was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 40-13.
Liberal's defeat came about despite a quality game from J. Brooks Kappelmann, who scored seven points along with seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Xavier Tafoya, who scored four points along with five rebounds.
Hugoton's win was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1. They've been dominating during the matches in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 31.23 points. As for Liberal, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-2.
Everything came up roses for Hugoton against Liberal in their previous matchup back in December of 2022 as the team secured a 75-38 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Hugoton since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
