Two dominant backs in Cooper Crosby and Jordan Stapleton are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Gulfport Admirals will head out on the road to face off against the West Harrison Hurricanes at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Gulfport knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 31 points or more in their past three matchups -- so hopefully West Harrison likes a good challenge.
Gulfport is headed into the game after thoroughly thrashing St. Martin: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Admirals blew the Yellow Jackets out of the water with a 40-0 final score. The Admirals haven't had any issues with the Yellow Jackets recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Gulfport got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Parker Nettles out in front who threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.1 yards per attempt. Nettles' passing game has become a key predictor of the Admirals' success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise. A healthy portion of Nettles' aerial production (117 yards to be exact) went to Camden Morgan, who also brought in two receiving touchdowns.
Gulfport's run defense was locked in: St. Martin could only muster 1.3 yards per carry. The team can thank Andre Peters for the heroic effort on defense: he. Gulfport's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 3.9.

Gulfport's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for six sacks. St. Martin's QB won't forget Peters anytime soon given he sacked him 2.5 times. Peters has been hot for a while, having also posted seven or more total tackles the last 17 times he's played. Deandre Williams was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making six total tackles (2.0 for loss) in addition to snagging an interception.
Meanwhile, West Harrison never let their opponents score on Thursday. They enjoyed a cozy 18-0 win over Harrison Central. Given the Hurricanes' advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi football rankings (they are ranked 24th, while the Red Rebels are ranked 98th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Sean Fairley and Julian Chong. Fairley rushed for 249 yards and three scores while picking up 8.6 yards per carry while Chong rushed for 188 yards while picking up 11.1 yards per carry. Those three rushing touchdowns gave Fairley a new career-high.
Gulfport picked up their first home victory, bumping their record up to 4-2. As for West Harrison, their record is now 6-1.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Gulfport has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 171 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like West Harrison struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 344 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Gulfport suffered a grim 21-0 defeat to West Harrison when the teams last played back in October of 2020. Can the Admirals avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
