Windham extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 2-9 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 12-11 heartbreaker at the hands of the Grand Valley Mustangs. Even if the Bombers couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.
Lillian Pesa-Garrett spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and 11 unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, Chanyse Jones made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Makenzi Blockinger, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
As for Grand Valley, their record is now 2-4. With that victory, they brought their scoring average up to 7 runs per game.
On Grand Valley's side, they also let their pitcher toss all eight innings and she was also dialed-in: Ady Kovacic gave up seven earned (and four unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 12 Ks. Those 12 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Kovacic.
At the plate, Grand Valley let Maddie Lowry-Stark and Breanna Rowland run wild. Lowry-Stark went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Rowland went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Rowland has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Kaityln Baumann was another key player, going 3-for-5 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Coming up, Windham will venture away from home to square off against Struthers at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Grand Valley, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 12-0 loss against Edgewood on the 18th.
