The Greenbrier West Cavaliers will be home for the holidays to greet the Midland Trail Patriots at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Greenbrier West's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss dating back to last season. Their rough 51-30 defeat to Poca might stick with them for a while.
Meanwhile, Midland Trail entered their tilt with Pocahontas County with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Midland Trail blew past Pocahontas County 93-47 on the road. Given Midland Trail's advantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked ninth, while Pocahontas County is ranked 83rd), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Midland Trail got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Payton Bailes out in front who went 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 24 points and 2 assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Bailes has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Campbell, who scored 18 points along with three steals.
Greenbrier West bumped their record down to 0-1 with that defeat, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.4 points per game. As for Midland Trail, their win bumped their record up to 3-0.
Greenbrier West couldn't quite finish off Midland Trail when the teams last played back in February and fell 64-62. Thankfully for Greenbrier West, Matthew Light (who scored 17 points) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
