The Wakefield Wolverines will take on the Orange Panthers at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Wakefield is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.
Wakefield took a six-run loss the last time they faced off against Wake Forest, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Wolverines skirted past the Cougars 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Wolverines have posted since May 16, 2024.
Wakefield got a great performance from Aniela Piscorik as she struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk).
At the plate, Holly Work was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Brenna Colleran was another key player, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Orange, who bounced back after a loss on the road back in March. They walked away with a 13-8 victory over Person on Tuesday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Panthers needed considering they were shut out in their previous contest.
Orange got a massive performance out of Katie Carden, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Hayleigh Hammond, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Orange was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .387. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Wakefield pushed their record up to 14-2 with the win, which was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Orange, their win bumped their record up to 7-5.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Wakefield hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.9 home runs per game. However, it's not like Orange struggles in that department as they've been averaging 1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Wakefield was able to grind out a solid victory over Orange in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, winning 7-3. Will the Wolverines repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
