Baseball Recap: Banquete Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Banquete can bid farewell to their four-game losing streak thanks to their game on Friday. They skirted past the Santa Gertrudis Academy Lions 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Bulldogs have posted since March 6th.

JD Gomez made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

In other pitching news, Norman Ramirez looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Jayden Gomez, who went 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jon Smithwick, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI.

Banquete was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .381. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matches.

Banquete's win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 9-7-1. As for Santa Gertrudis Academy, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-16 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Banquete will take on San Diego at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Bulldogs 3.8, the Vaqueros 4) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Santa Gertrudis Academy, they will square off against Premont at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
