Cypress and Tustin are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2015, but not for long. After each having a week off, the two teams will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The game will give Cypress their first taste of in-conference action this season.
Cypress is likely headed into the matchup with a focus on the second half, which is when things went downhill against West last Friday. The Centurions took a 33-28 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Warriors. Despite 102 more yards than the Warriors, the Centurions couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
Cypress' loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Bryson Busbee, who rushed for 180 yards and one TD while picking up 8.2 yards per carry, and Ian Do, who gained 72 total yards and three touchdowns.
Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 2.3 yards per carry. The team can thank Alijah Ashcraft for the heroic effort on defense: he. Cypress didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 7.2.
Meanwhile, Tustin didn't have too much trouble with Yorba Linda last Friday as they won 21-7.
A big part of Tustin's victory came down to the chemistry between Ayden Edwards and his top target Hayden Koo. Edwards threw for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 73.1% of his passes while Koo picked up 80 receiving yards and one score. What's more, Edwards racked up 123.4 passer rating, the most he's had since back in September of 2024. A healthy portion of Edwards' aerial production (94 yards to be exact) also went to Jeremiah Salvant.
Tustin's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB three times. Leading the way was Jon Ioane with two sacks. Another thorn in Yorba Linda's side was Jeremiah Williams, who picked up a sack, made nine total tackles (2.0 for loss), and defended one pass.
This is the second loss in a row for Cypress and nudges their season record down to 3-2. Their recent woes sure aren't a result of their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 6.35 yards per carry in those games compared to only 3.2 in the others. As for Tustin, they now also have a winning record of 3-2.
Cypress was taken down by Tustin 37-7 in their previous meeting back in October of 2024. Thankfully for the Centurions, Eimesse Essis (who rushed for 186 yards and one TD while picking up 8.5 yards per carry, and also picked up 44 receiving yards) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
