The Wheeler Bearcats's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their 13th straight defeat. They were beaten by Illiana Christian 71-40. Wheeler was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 48-19.
Despite the defeat, Wheeler saw an underclassman step up: Nick Scott scored 20 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Scott has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Carter Blane, who scored seven points.
Wheeler struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only an offensive rebound. They are 1-5 when they can't control their own glass like that.
Andy Spoelman was his usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with six rebounds and five steals for Illiana Christian. Spoelman hasn't dropped below 18 points for four straight games. Dylan Polak was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with five rebounds.
Wheeler's loss was their sixth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 3-15. As for Illiana Christian, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 12-7.
Wheeler will head out on the road to challenge Hebron at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hebron will roll in looking for their 13th straight win, something Wheeler surely won't give up without a fight. As for Illiana Christian, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Marquette Catholic at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
