Mathis has gone a perfect 3-0 against West Oso recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Pirates will challenge the Bears at 6:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Mathis has five straight wins, West Oso has 11 straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Mathis had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt George West on Tuesday. The Pirates put the hurt on the Longhorns with a sharp 12-2 victory. Considering the Pirates have won seven contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Alyssa Herrera made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.

In other batting news, Mathis got a massive performance out of Lexi Rodriguez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs, and two RBI. Those three hits gave Rodriguez a new career-high. Charleen Hernandez was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.
Meanwhile, while it was West Oso who put the first points on the board on Tuesday, it was Odem who put up more. The Bears came up short against the Owls, falling 14-3.
Izabella Martinez was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. Another player making a difference was Giovanni De Los Santos, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run.
Mathis pushed their record up to 11-6-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for West Oso, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-17.
West Oso's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mathis has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.7 hits per game. It's a different story for West Oso, though, as they've been averaging 11 hits. Given Mathis' sizable advantage in that area, the Bears will need to find a way to close that gap.
Mathis took their win against West Oso in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a conclusive 18-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
