West Vigo is a perfect 10-0 against South Putnam since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Vikings will head out to square off against the Eagles at 5:30 p.m. West Vigo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12 runs per game this season.
West Vigo had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Covington on Monday. The Vikings blew past the Trojans 16-6. The win continues a trend for the Vikings in their matchups with the Trojans: they've now won six in a row.
Cameron Funk spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Jaleigh Lindley was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Lily Krause, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
West Vigo always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, South Putnam got themselves on the board against Northview on Tuesday, but Northview never followed suit. They walked away with a 3-0 victory over the Knights. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since May 7, 2019, but that streak is no more.
Not much got past Emelia Wells, who gave up just five hits and racked up seven Ks to keep Northview off the board.
On the hitting side, South Putnam's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Taylor Boyce, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
South Putnam pushed their record up to 13-4 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for West Vigo, their record is now 18-1.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. West Vigo hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .420. However, it's not like South Putnam struggles in that department as they've averaged .397. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
West Vigo skirted past South Putnam 9-8 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Vikings since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
